SFJH Course Planning Guide

SFJH Course Registration Information

Every student is required to take Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Two years of Physical Education is also required for students in 6th and 7th grade. Athletics, PE, Dance, and Cheer all count as Physical Education. SFISD is proud to offer advanced classes in all core academic subjects for students. General Employability Skills is a high school credit course that is required for all 8th grade students.

During the Spring semester, students will request the courses they prefer the following year. The initial request is completed in the Spring. It is important for students to plan their choices carefully because class size and staffing decisions will be determined from their choices.

SCHEDULE CHANGE INFORMATION

Please use the link to request a schedule change.
Since all classes are full, a schedule change will be dependent upon space in the desired class becoming available. We will review requests and see what we can work out. Please note, changing an elective course often dictates changing the student's entire schedule, including core classes. We will work on schedule changes during the first two weeks of school.

*NEW*Looking at Next Year -Advanced Course Criteria

Per our Educational Planning Guide:

Advanced Courses

Advanced Courses are offered in all core academic classes and are designed to stimulate and challenge students to perform at an advanced academic level. Students who register for advanced courses need to carefully consider the demands of these classes. A student may sign up for 1, 2, 3 or 4 advanced courses. To be eligible for advanced course registration, students must meet the criteria below.

Math:

  • Math: Students who score in the top 40% on their 5th Grade Math STAAR will automatically be placed on the Advanced track in 6th Grade. Parents may opt-out.
  •  The advanced math track starts in 6th grade. Students cannot start the advanced track in 7th or 8th grades without missing the required curriculum. 6th grade advanced Math covers half of the 7th grade Math TEKS and all of the 6th grade Math TEKS. 7th-grade advanced Math covers half of 7th-grade Math TEKS and all of 8th-grade Math TEKS. Students in the advanced Math track are expected to take Algebra 1 in the 8th grade.
  •  Students in Advanced 6th Grade Math will take the 6th grade STAAR.
  • Students in Advanced 7th Grade Math will take the 8th grade STAAR.
  • Students in Algebra I will take the Algebra STAAR EOC

These students will also need to take an advanced math test in high school. SFHS will inform parents of this in their sophomore or junior year. The test is typically the SAT and students take it during the school day.

Reading:

  • Reading: Students who score in the top 40% on their Reading STAAR in 5th grade will also be placed into an advanced class in 6th grade. Parents may opt-out.
  • Advanced Reading will also have a required reading component during the summer prior.
  • 7th and 8th grade Reading: Students must pass the STAAR test in Reading in the prior year and make an 80 overall in the course.

Science:

  • 6th-8th Advanced Science: Students must pass the STAAR test in Math in the prior year and make an 80 overall in the course.

Social Studies:

  • 6th-8th Advanced Social Studies: students must pass the STAAR test in Reading in the prior year and make an 80 overall in the course.

*Please contact your child’s counselor if your child does not meet these requirements but would still like to participate in the advanced curriculum. Parents can have their child’s grades and STAAR scores reviewed by a committee.
